VIRGINIA

Virginia first travelled to Lombok as an exchange student in 1997 and immediately fell in love with the culture, the people and the wonderful food. Since then she has returned regularly to visit her host families and friends and explore more of this beautiful island.

Since being adopted by Abul’s family as their saudara In Indonesian the term saudara describes a familial relationship but is also commonly used to describe a close friend considered to be family. she has had the pleasure of living with them in Senaru and learning traditional cooking with Abul’s mother and wife.

Virginia is an experienced independent traveller. Her passion for travel has led her hiking in the Caucasus Mountains of Azerbaijan and Georgia, trekking in the mountains of Chin State in Burma and traversing the Muller Range in Kalimantan. Yet Lombok continues to draw her back, and together with Abul and his niece she has hiked to the summit of Mount Rinjani and explored the many walking trails in and around Senaru. Virginia speaks English and Indonesian and with Abul’s help is learning the Sasak language.
